ABS-CBN franchise, operation ends next month March 2020

FEBRUARY 16, 2020 — A popular senator asked on Sunday fellow lawmakers to make sure the country’s largest broadcasting network can still operate after its franchise expires next month.

Senator Grace Poe, daughter of an action movie icon, asked colleagues to show proof that ABS-CBN will be allowed to operate while its franchise renewal is pending in the legislature

“Maganda siguro kung in writing o kaya at least verbally sabihin ng Kongreso, ‘We commit to give ABS-CBN through the National Telecommunications Commission a temporary permit to operate’ kasi hindi naman ‘yan nakasulat sa batas,” Poe said in a statement.

Poe, who was former chair of the movie and television review board, said the 11,000 jobs are at stake should ABS-CBN completely shut down when its 25-year legislative franchise expires.

Poe has earlier filed a resolution directing the Senate committee on public services to look into ABS-CBN’s compliance to the terms of its franchise.

The hearings would help senators in making judgment when the franchise bill is transmitted to them for their deliberation, said Poe.

“Timbangin natin [kung] ang serbisyo ba na ibinibigay ng ABS-CBN ay akma o kayang isantabi ang mga kakulangan nito.” Poe said.

On Friday, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said the renewal of the ABS-CBN franchise will have to wait until the middle of the year because it is the least of the chamber’s priorities.

“Kung tayo maghe-hearing ngayong… it will suck all the energy of the 18th Congress,” he said in an inteview.

“Mapababayaan ang ibang mga importante. At pustahan tayo, lahat ng anti, pipila makapagsalita; lahat ng pro, pipila para magsalita.”

Cayetano said Congress can only begin to tackle the franchise renewal by May or after President Rodrigo Duterte’s State of the Nation Address in July this year.

However, he assured the network will not go off-air even if its franchise expires.
